Dream, Believe, Inspire!!
By Liv O.
This is the story of me, Liv, and Addie as we go through the process of dreaming, believing, and inspiring others. This story involves a bully, a bakery, and dream.
It started at the mall on May 22nd, 2010. I told Addie she should get that the super cute tunic she was trying on. Addie giggled and said, “You have to buy that top you just tried on, it’s so cute!” Then Brooke and Julia came around the corner into the dressing room and looked at us with disgust. A little about Brooke, she is the most popular, snobby, rich, and stuck up girl in the world! As she walked in, she said to us, “What do we have here, a popular hanging out with a non-popular?” “Addie if you hang out with us” waving her hand to Julia and herself, “you have to avoid the non-popular. ” Addie never said anything about being a popular. Even if she was a popular, she was my best friend and I stepped in to say, “She wasn’t hanging out with me she was, um, telling me this shirt is hideous.” Addie looked at me and I could see it in her eyes, she looked relieved, unhappy, and excited at the same time. I was mad at Brooke and happy for Addie. Brooke said something that sounded like the adults from Charlie Brown. I was in my own world of thoughts as my mind raced from one “what if” to the next. When I did wake up, Brooke said she and Julia were going to the Salon, if Addie would like to join them. I wanted to talk to Addie; I would do whatever it took to make sure she didn’t go to that Salon with Brooke. I pretended to check my phone and quickly spoke up telling Addie that my mom was waiting outside and we needed to go. Brooke caught on really slow (luckily). Addie pulled me to the side and told me to quit lying and she was going to hang out with Brooke! I was shocked, but tried to keep my cool. I think I failed. Brooke came over to us and said, “Sorry to interrupt, but we have an appointment. Are you coming or not?” Addie said yes! At that moment, I tried to remember why I wanted to be friends with Addie. After they left gossiping and giggling, I called Mom and told her to come pick me up. I cried until dinner.
Since this all happened on a Saturday, I barely talked to Addie at all. I think it was Addie who started a rumor saying I still ate my boogers! Which is totally not true! Everybody laughed and pretended to pick their nose as I walked to my locker. It was humiliating! She didn’t even show up to rehearsal for our school play after school. Immediately afterwards I called Addie and told her to come over ASAP! After we snuggled in under my big comfy blanket, she spilled. I don’t think Addie has ever talked so much at once. She apologized for not sitting with me at lunch, not talking to me, and skipping rehearsal. I told her it was fine and I wasn’t mad at her. I think she bought it. Even though I was secretly furious. Addison Marie Smith just admitted to backstabbing her best friend! I knew what I would do after she left, cry.
When we were very little, seven, I think, we decided to go into business with each other and have our own little bakery. Addie thought it should be called Addie & Liv’s Bakery. I thought it should be Friends Stick Together and be famous for our cinnamon rolls. We tried to raise the money ourselves, but we ended up spending the $5.00 we earned at a garage sale our mom’s were doing over the summer when we were 8 years old. I don’t know if we’ll be able to live our dream with Addie being a popular. At the time I didn’t know what to do about the whole Brooke and Addie thing.
I told Addie how I felt on Wednesday after I gathered enough courage. I told her everything, especially how I felt. After I finished talking she told me, “I’m sorry, why didn’t you tell me?” I didn’t know what to say except, “You looked so happy and I didn’t want to interfere.” I was about to cry. She looked at me with guilt and told me, “I want to be friends with Brooke. I’m going to try to talk to her and Julia too about being nicer people. If they don’t change then I won’t hang out with them any more. Either way I’ll come back to you.” I didn’t really know what to say except, “Okay. I’ll be waiting.”
I waited to hear from Addie for the next week. I felt sick all week. I missed a couple days of school so I wouldn’t have to worry about the situation. I have a lot of homework, but it was all worth it. When I was at school I did whatever I could to give her space. I sat at the opposite side of the room. The only thing that I didn’t like, was not being able to hang out with her, is that I didn’t really have any other friends. Just a few people that I talk to every now and then. I feel like I butt into their lives and annoy them to no ends. I was a wreck.
She finally contacted me on Friday, May 31st, 2010. She called me that evening around 4:30. I almost didn’t pick up my phone. I’m glad I did though. She told me to come over to her house ASAP then hung up. I told my mom I would be back in about 30 minutes. I ran out of the house, jumped on my bike, and peddled non-stop to her house. She was waiting on her doorstep for me. I dismounted from my bike and ran to meet her. Addie hugged me until I couldn’t breathe. We sat on the step and talked for a good 15 minutes. Addie told me she was sorry and was being kicked out of the popular group. I asked why, and she replied, “I realized I wasn’t as happy as I was with you and Brooke wouldn’t change her ways.” I noticed her eyes and nose were red. I could tell she had been crying. I was about to cry, so was she, I think. I asked her about our bakery. She looked surprised that I still remembered that. We were going to talk to our parents about it tonight to see if we could start saving money to open our bakery called Liv & Addie’s Bakery. We opened our small bakery on May 31st, 2013 in Seattle, WA.
Our parents loved our ideas. They started saving their money for a down payment for a bakery or space we could use. We saved our money too. We both made a deal that $15.00 would try to go into our bank account every two weeks. By February 2013, we were able to buy an old restaurant that closed about 4 months before. There was enough left over to renovate the kitchen, dining area, and everything else. By May 25th,we were ready to open it to the world. We were very nervous as we advertised our opening. We used posters, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram posts. I didn’t know what the turn out would be.
I’m writing this story as a young adult with Addie next to me in our small bakery by the pier in Seattle, otherwise known as Headquarters. There are many of our bakeries and kiosks all over the country. We are writing this story to show others that it might not be easy to stand up to a bully or face your problems, but you shouldn’t give up on yourself or others. We went through the process of dreaming of something we wanted to do, believing we could do it together, pursuing our dream, and inspiring others to follow their dreams as well. We decided to go with the name, Friends Stick Together!
