Design Geeks!!
By Liv O.
It all started when we started a club that design, sews, and sells original clothes to the students of Marker High School. All made by us, The Design Geeks, as a lot of kids called us. My name is Kaylee and this is the story of the Design Geeks. Haley, Emily, Julia, Briana, and I started our club when we were in 9th grade. We met in Miss. Taylor's 8th grade science class, she was a happy teacher filled with perkiness. It was kind of annoying actually. Any way, we were put in a group for the Science Fair, which I think, is the most stupid idea ever. We didn't know each other; all we knew is that we wanted to get it over with it as quickly as possible. Emily thought it would be a good idea to build a robot. Julia thought we should do an experiment making two paper airplanes, and then on one of the plane's wings cut them in half and seeing which one went further. Briana thought we should grow two plants and put some oil in one then explain how the oil affected the plant's growth. She was obviously the smart one of the group. Haley and I thought Briana's idea was the one we should do. Emily and Julia saw why their idea didn't make sense after a good 10 minutes of arguing. As we started to work on the project we got to know each other. But this all started on May 6, 2012, four weeks before the last day of school. We got to know each other but not enough to start our little group. We didn't know we liked to design clothes. Briana's idea got us an A+ on our report cards. I was in touch with Haley and Julia during the summer. When school started up again we saw each other and decided to get to know each other better. Julia found out I liked to design clothes, then I found out Emily was good at drawing. Briana found out Haley was good at sewing. Emily found out Julia was good picking out fabrics and accessories. That's when our little club of five was born.
There were a lot of “popular” kids who were stuck up and snotty. A group of girls like that, who are now my archenemies. Brooke and her paparazzi Kylie and Adelaide, they follow Brooke around and do whatever she tells them to do. It’s ridiculous. Brooke does whatever she can to put other people down. We are one of those “people.” Brooke put Emily (the most sensible person in our group) down because she is a nerd and she shouldn’t be hanging out with us, then she told the rest of us that by hanging out with her dropped our coolness factor at least 80%. Then she made fun of our little group of friends or as she said “group of geeks.”
Briana thought we should design a line of clothes to show Brooke. We designed an entire line of clothing that fits Briana perfectly since it was her idea. Then we put up a sign stating, “Do you want original clothes that are unique, simple, and creative?” We got 11 calls from students. We were busy for at least 11 weeks remaking our clothes. After the kids who did buy our clothes were walking advertisements, we got tons of more calls and we were busy for 6 more weeks. That’s where we got our start.
Brooke’s mom is a fashion designer; so she knows what looks good and what doesn’t. When she saw our first line of clothes, she didn’t like them, Julia told me she called them “ugly clothes that only nerds would want to wear.” Then when she saw our second and third lines of clothing. She came up to us at school and told us she wanted to work with us in her business, New York: New Designs!
Haley, Julia, and Emily didn’t think we would have a chance in New York: New Designs! I didn’t blame them; everybody has one in a billion shot of making it. I didn’t really believe it either. There was no way this was happening! Maybe we could make it.
On April 5, 2012, we had a meeting with Stephanie Lee the head of New York: New Designs! She’s Brooke’s mom and she acts and looks like Brooke. She was very snobby and rude, but she was giving us a chance so we didn’t really care. It went like this we sat down, we gave ten good reasons why we should have a chance in the fashion world. Mrs. Lee said she will let us know, but she said it with a frown on her face and still seemed happy like she wanted to hire us or something. We don’t know how it went at all.
On April 14, 2013, I got a letter in the mail saying New York: New Designs wanted to work with ONE of us basically saying they wanted us to choose which one of us gets to live the dream we all shared and wanted to live out together! I didn’t know what to do. I wanted the job, but I didn’t know how to say it to the rest of the club. I thought maybe I could tell Mrs. Lee that we decided that I was the one we chose, but I thought they would be very angry with me and wouldn’t want to be my friends or want anything to do with me after that. The letter came on a Friday after school, so I didn’t have to tell them the next three days at least. I didn’t sleep at all that night or the next night or the next night. So I decided to let my friends know about it on Tuesday. On that day April 17, 2013, I told Emily about it. She freaked out and asked me if I told the rest of the girls. I hesitated and said no, then she freaked out more. I asked her if she wanted to you know do it, she said she only wanted to do it with the rest group not by herself. I agreed with her and the bell rang for 3rd period. When 3rd period was over and it was lunchtime and we saw each other. Emily and I acted as normal as possible, maybe to normal because Haley, Briana, and Julia seemed to be acting a little awkward. We told them about the letter they were ecstatic until we got to the part about the only one of us gets to live our dream. Then we got in a fight about who should live the dream. Briana thought she should do it. Julia thought she should do it because could sew, but then Julia countered she could too. I thought I should do it because I actually design clothes, everyone else said it took every one else to design and sew the clothes, that’s when we realized we needed each other to design everything. Haley called Mrs. Lee and told her to set up a meeting Saturday at 3:30 p.m. During the week we worked up a power point and speech to tell her why we have to decline unless she wanted to work with all of us. That was a long shot though.
When Saturday came around, we dressed in the clothes we designed to try to show her why she liked clothes because they’re unique and creative which is why she wanted to work with us in the first place. Any way she said she’d think about it and come back in an hour. When we came back she said she didn’t want to work with all of us. That’s when Emily went all out and screamed at Mrs. Lee why she should let us work with us. After that Mrs. Lee said to come back in an hour. Then Emily went on and on again why she shouldn’t put us off any longer. Mrs. Lee and all of us looked at Emily like she was crazy that’s when I realized she might have blown all of our chances at making it in the fashion world. Mrs. Lee said she didn’t want to work with just one of us; she wanted to work with all us! I couldn’t believe it! Mrs. Stephanie Lee wanted to work with us. I all the sudden realized we didn’t have a name for our club! When I told them that, everyone decided we should be called the Design Geeks and the name stuck now we design clothes that celebrities wear when they are walking the red carpet. Haley, Emily, Julia, Briana, and I, Kaylee, are now and always will be best friends forever!
